Gum Box morphs into gift box: Extreme Recycling

Thanks to Jana (ReUseIt Cafe) for finding this.   Here it is in living colour!

From the blog…

No, I don’t think its a big deal to throw away your gum box and wrappers,  but what if you could turn them into something beautiful instead.

Gum Box Ornaments

I just took saved gum wrappers and used some thinned white glue (50/50 in a glue bottle) to decoupage them to the outside of thier gum box. You can’t do this with regular foil (you’d have to use spray adhesive), but since it is paper backed . . .

Then I tied a ribbon on (from a spool I got at the dollar store – I’ll use rest of the ribbon and the spool itself later on), and added a little fishing line.

Not bad, huh? If you’re a regular gum chewer, you could make a ton of these, and it doesn’t use all the wrappers to cover the box, so next I’m going to make a companion from a raisin box.

The HodgePodgery in Midtown Gives Lesson in Environmental Economics

You’ve heard of recycling, but how about “upcycling”?

At the HodgePodgery in Harrisburg, about 70 percent of their merchandise is “up-cycled.”

The Midtown shop’s co-owner, Dawn Rettinger, says upcycling is like recycling with added value.

Old items that would otherwise be thrown away are given new life.

Records can be clocks, bottle caps can be earrings, Rettinger says, pointing to objects in the shop.

She says virtually anything is possible.

“You don`t want everything landfill bound, you don`t want to throw everything out, and also, it`s cheap, it`s easy to do,” Rettinger said.

The HodgePodgery has been in business in Midtown Harrisburg for about a year-and-a-half.

Everyone who sells their work at the shop is from a 100-mile radius of the Capital City.

The HodgePodgery is having a “make and take” night Friday, where you can make your own upcycling objects.
