OTTAWA’S 5th REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET

It’s our 5th semi-annual RRFM!  W
hat is Ottawa’s RRFM (Really Really Free Market)?  Just like a garage sale / flea market, except everything is FREE!  Ottawa’s RRFM is Canada’s first free market based on environmental values and sustainability.  Ottawa’s RRFM uses free sharing of good reusable items to reduce the number of items being prematurely recycled,  trashed, or just stashed away out of sight.

Drop off your surplus stuff in good condition, and take anything you want or need.  You don’t have to drop to shop!  Drop off books, toys, clothing, small appliances, decorative items, old computers, electronics, furniture… the kitchen sink… almost everything.  Take home perfectly good items you can use. It’s all FREE.

At our new permanent home in Vanier, we are the guests of The Village International Mennonite Church & St. Margaret’s Anglican Diocese.

Ottawa Plantcycle now includes co-operative gardening among local residents.  Free plants, cuttings, seeds, and advice will be offered.  Drop off your surplus garden accessories, tools, decor, and plants; and, take any that you can use — either indoors or out!  Anything to do with gardening is welcome at the Plantcyclers table. facebook.com/groups/OttawaPlantcycle/

As usual, our eWaste collection partner, RD Long Computers, will be right behind the church at 287 Cody Street to accept pre-owned computers and any eWaste that is no longer of value and in need of proper recycling.  You can be confident that your digital signature is secure when you recycle with a registered OES (Ontario Electronics Stewardship) collector!

So much more, and, did we mention, it’s all FREE.  See you on September 22!

Haifa’s RRFM in a tent

Kishkushim ?????? ????????.

Haifa’s Tent City

by CARMIA
Though Haifa’s “tent city” can’t compare to Tel Aviv’s, it has grown from three tents to about 50. But not only has the number of tents increased – a real culture has sprung up, along with hierarchies and role divisions, and local norms. The infrastructure has expanded to include chemical toilets, an ecological dish washing system, a living “room” and kitchen, and other amenities.

Some of the alternative values that have taken hold at the tent city are reflected in this “free market.” People leave items they no longer want and may take whatever they want (“freecycling”).

Ultimate Recycling Event – East Brunswick, NJ Patch

Freecycle a Huge Success – East Brunswick, NJ Patch

Ultimate recycling event brought more than 700 people.  The event was so popular they are considering making it a regular twice a year event in East Brunswick.

They carried in tables and chairs and bags of old clothes. Others maybe lugged in old computers or tools and maybe a bike.

It didn’t matter what people brought, because it was all welcome Sunday during Freecycling, which invited people to bring their old, unwanted items, leave them, and pick and choose from something someone else brought to be discarded

In other words, it was the ultimate recycling day.

“The event was a huge success. We counted 258 cars attending, and with a likely average of about two to three people per car, that is somewhere between 500 and 750 people participating,” said David Moskowitz of the East Brunswick Environmental commission. “We were able to keep literally tons of stuff out of the landfill. Virtually everybody brought things to exchange and wound up taking something home they needed.”

Sponsored by the Friends of the Environmental Commission, the departments of Recycling and Parks and Recreation and R. Mor Inc., Freecycling was so popular that it may become a regular event. In fact, Moskowitz said the Friends might consider holding it twice a year.

“It was the ultimate form of recycling, which is to reuse,” he said. “The variety of items ranged from baseball cards, to clothing, tools, electric appliances, lights, a kitchen sink, bikes, furniture, computers, exercise equipment and literally hundreds of other items. About 90 percent of the used items that were dropped off were taken. Half of what was left will be recycled. “

The event brought in 26 bags of clothes, shoes and toys, all picked up to be shipped up to those in need. In fact, everything that wasn’t grabbed by those that attended was picked to be recycled.

Moskowitz gave credit to the event’s organizers for pulling the event off and making it so successful.

“Huge kudos are due to Liti (Haramaty) since she conceived and planned the event. I would encourage everyone to join the Friends (it’s free) so they can get updates and notifications about these types of programs we run. They simply need to go to the website at www.friendsebec.com and register.

 In Ottawa, Canada

Here in Ottawa Canada, FullCircles Ottawa‘s Kelly Wilson has put on 3 events similar to this which we label RRFMs (Really Really Free Markets).  If you’d like to learn more about our RRFMs, visit our Facebook group.

A significant difference which we quite envy at the East Brunswick event was the active participation of the local government “Environmental Commission” department.  At the most recent Ottawa event at the beginning of October, the Mayor and one city councillor visited the event, said a few supportive words and left.  Next step… active involvement of the appropriate City department(s).

Lancaster PA adds an “RRFM” area to its market

via  LancasterOnline –  Market returns – News.

On Saturday, June 4, the market will add an area of donated items that will be distributed for free. “The Really, Really Free Market” (RRFM) will promote recycling and reuse of goods, as well as provide community members with items they need in these difficult financial times, said a spokesperson for the Lancaster Market.

Interesting idea.  At Lancaster, PA, the RRFM is becoming a regular feature of the full Lancaster Outdoor Market.  So the RRFM idea will be tucked in with all the other features of the Lancaster Market — produce, baked goods, Community Supported Agriculture, urban gardening, crafts, etc.

The Official Frugal Fun Ottawa Blog

Posted by Josée in Off-Topic on May 30th, 2011

“Did you know that once a year, Ottawa has a market where you can do your shopping for free? That’s right, no money changes hands. It’s called Ottawa’s Really Really Free Market, and it’s happening on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 at the corner of Montreal Road and Begin Street in Vanier. Kelly Wilson, the Community Liaison and Event Co-Ordinator for Full Circles Ottawa, and the creator of the Really Really Free Market, submitted the event to Frugal Fun Ottawa. I don’t normally post garage sales, craft sales, art sales, etc. on Frugal Fun Ottawa, but as soon as I read about the Really Really Free Market I knew that I had to post it on the site, and that I would write a blog post about it.”
