20 Surprising Uses for White Vinegar
By Mary Hunt

White vinegar is economical, all natural, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, amazing, astounding and cheap. Enjoy these interesting tidbits.

1 Spray white distilled vinegar on furniture to stop the cat from scratching the fabric or legs.

2 Soak your feet in white distilled vinegar to stop athlete’s foot.

3 Pantyhose last longer when rinsed in water containing 1 tablespoon of white distilled vinegar.

4 To remove soap residue that makes black clothes look dull, use white distilled vinegar in your final rinse.

5 Get rid of the tiny holes left along the hemline when you take out the hem of any garment by moistening a cloth with white distilled vinegar, placing it under the fabric and ironing.

6 Get rid of stubborn bathtub film by wiping it with white distilled vinegar and then scouring with baking soda.

7 Clean shower door tracks by filling them with white distilled vinegar and letting it sit for a few hours. Pour hot water into the tracks and wash and scrub away the scum with a toothbrush.

8 To make the toilet bowl sparkle, pour in a cup or more of diluted white distilled vinegar and let it sit several hours or overnight. Scrub well with a toilet brush and flush.

9 Vinegar is great on tile, but never use white distilled vinegar on marble. The acid can damage the surface.

10 Keep a cat out of a garden area by placing paper or cloth that’s been soaked in white vinegar in the area.

11 Soothe a sunburn with a spray of white distilled vinegar, repeating as often as you like. Ice-cold white distilled vinegar will feel even better, and may prevent blistering and peeling, too.

12 Make nail polish last longer. Wipe fingernails with cotton balls dipped in white distilled vinegar before applying the nail polish.

13 Make creamy vinaigrette by adding plain or whipped cream to a mixture of one part white distilled vinegar and three parts oil.

14 Make pasta less sticky and reduce some of its starch. Add just a dash of white distilled vinegar to the water as it cooks.

15 Add moistness and taste to any chocolate cake, homemade or from a box, with a spoonful of white distilled vinegar.

16 Keep molded gelatin desserts and salads from sagging or melting in the summer heat by adding a teaspoon of white distilled vinegar for each box of gelatin used.

17 Rid the windshield wipers of road grime by wiping them with a white distilled vinegar-soaked cloth.

18 Give leather upholstery an extra shine by cleaning it with hot white distilled vinegar and rinsing with soapy water.

19 Make your car extra shiny by adding a few drops of white distilled vinegar to your bucket of water.

20 To clean tarnished brass, copper and pewter, use a paste with equal amounts of white distilled vinegar and table salt.

Cheap Chick: Dandelion Killer – Spring Is Here!

Two dandelions side-by-side in some grass.

Image via Wikipedia

If leaving dandelions in your yard is not an alternative, you can make your own dandelion and weed killer using inexpensive and safe household ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon of white vinegar
  • 1 lb. table salt
  • 8 drops of liquid dish soap

Instructions

Mix vinegar and salt in a pan on the stove top. (If you use a stainless steel pan that is grungy looking, it will acquire a like-new bright finish).

Bring to a boil so that the salt dissolves into the vinegar. Turn off the stove.

Stir in the dish soap.

Allow the mixture to cool enough so that it won’t burn you or melt your spray bottle. (You can let it cool completely if you aren’t in a hurry to go out and kill dandelions).

Pour the mixture into the bottle and spray on plants.

It is best to use a stream setting on your bottle and aim directly into the middle of the dandelion rosette so that you do not kill the surrounding grass.

Your dandelions will be dead in less than a day.

Cost Analysis of the Earth-Friendly Alternative

A one-gallon jug of generic vinegar cost $2.00. A one-pound container of salt cost $1.00. The cost of dish soap is nominal. The total cost for one gallon of non-toxic dandelion killer is $3.00.

So if you’re not into making salad, don’t want to substitute your coffee for roasted dandelion root, and not into making wine…you can brew up a batch of DANDELION KILLER – not sold in stores – distilled in the privacy of your own home…

Good luck with those nasty little beasties…

Cheap Chick Litter Box Clean – Your Kitters Will Luv You!

I am a freak about my litter boxes.  With 3 cats wouldn’t you be?  I clean my boxes every 2-3 days and I have found that I have been able to extend the life of the boxes using this green cleaning trick.

Simply sprinkle baking soda into the litter tray then add vinegar.  Let it fizz and then wash away with water.  Added bonus is that its green, it gets rid of the acidic urine smell and doesn’t add to it.  Your kitters will love you because cleaners offend their scented sensibilities.

How does this extend the life of the box?  Most of us use clay based litter unless you use some of the green alternatives/wood chips, clay litter will leave a residue on the bottom of the box.

If your box already has this residue try soaking the boxes for around 1/2 an hour and you will be amazed at how much of that stuff it will take away.  I have soaked 2 boxes 3 times to achieve a total clean.

Why bother adding baking soda to the box?  When you scoop the poop and clean the box regularly you shouldn’t have to use additives to keep the smell down.  The combination of vinegar and soda will eliminate those odours every time you clean!

Family Who Lived on $100 a Month Spills the Secret | The Stir

Posted by Amy Kuras on February 1, 2011 at 12:46 PM

While the economy is, allegedly, improving, many people have found themselves downsizing. Sometimes it’s a necessity. Their income has declined and they have to adjust to the new normal, but other times it’s something they do because they want to simplify and scale back the consumerism.

There are people following this all over the Internet to the point that it’s something of a movement. Buy Nothing Day on the day after Thanksgiving, a San Francisco group who made a promise to buy nothing new for one whole year, and a New York City blogger who pledged to not eat out for one full year. Which, if you live in New York, would be like going on a fast in the middle of a posh buffet.

The latest is a guy named David Hochman, who pledged, along with his wife and young son, to go a month without spending any more than $100.

They excepted their mortgage, utilities, and their son’s preschool tuition, but everything else, and I mean everything else, including gas and even Internet access, fell under that $100 spending limit.

They ended up discovering the wonders of Freecycle and the magic powers of baking soda, white vinegar, and hot water, and found that some of their more frugal habits stayed with them. Instead of rushing right out to a restaurant or loading up on groceries, they actually stayed home and entertained themselves with time they would typically spend shopping or on the computer.

Cutting back, whether on purpose or because circumstances demand it, does make you think a lot about what you spend and why. You may find that much of what you are currently spending your money on doesn’t actually make your life more fun.

Would you go on a spending fast?

Petitevache

I have to wonder why I never knew how great a box of baking soda and a container of white vinegar could be.

This one is so simple that this post will be one of the shorter ones;-)

To free a drain and make it flow better, this is a Cheap Chick trick you can use every 6 months or so.

Pour baking soda into the drain. Pour small amounts of vinegar and let the scrubbing bubbles do just that until they stop and add a few more drops of vinegar.

Continue until the scrubbing bubbles stop and, voila – free flowing drain!
